Anne Carson, the Canadian poet and classicist who won the 2026 Nobel Prize in Literature on October 8, has one rule for anyone opening her books for the first time: "Start in the middle."

She gave the same answer three times in a short [telephone interview with the Nobel Prize](https://www.nobelprize.org/prizes/literature/2026/carson/interview/) soon after the announcement, when Jenny Rydén asked where a new reader should begin, how Carson starts a book of her own and what she would tell someone who wants to be a writer. "Start in the middle. It's the only rule I have," she said. Asked what she meant, she added: "Well, whatever you take that to mean, find the middle, start there." To the would-be writers, she said: "No, the same one, start in the middle."

The Swedish Academy gave her the prize "for her bold and inventive oeuvre that, in playful dialogue with the classical tradition, has created new forms for contemporary literature." Born in Toronto in 1950, Carson has spent more than four decades moving between scholarship, poetry, translation and theater. Carson's books range from Eros the Bittersweet, a 1986 study of desire in ancient Greek poetry, to Nox, a 2010 elegy for her brother that comes in a box.
